Using My Resources

Image
In Cultural Diversity class this semester, we talked about handling culture shock.  One of the things I learned was that it’s important to use available resources for support and help.  This involves humbling yourself and acknowledging that while you want to minister to others, you have a lot that you can learn from others as well.  This week, I have been reminding myself to use the resources around me, which has been humbling but has also allowed me to start building relationships with the people around me.   I keenly sensed my own inadequacy, and a real need for help on Tuesday while attempting to assemble a bed.  It was from Amazon, and was one of those build-it-yourself things that arrives in dozens of pieces.  You know what I’m talking about — the kind of furniture that comes with a picture-book instruction manual that should be readable by a child, but really requires a peep stone or six months of language school to use (Satterfield, Text-Messag...

He Provides, Part 2

The first day of moving included so many little miracles and gifts from Jesus, but they’ve only continued throughout the week.  I was gifted another recliner.  Now I have two recliners, which makes my living room furniture symmetrical.  (This is way more important to me than it should be.) Also, I found a couch for a decent price online.  When I went to check it out, its owner and I got to talking about Jesus, and I may be picking her up for church on Sunday.  Not only was the couch perfect, but it was a perfect opportunity!   Then, someone showed up with fresh eggs, and informed me that there will always be an endless supply of them from the church.  Apparently, people can’t get rid of their eggs fast enough, which I can understand.   Everyone who knows me knows that I love animals.  I’m excited that almost every one of my neighbors has one, if not two, cats or dogs that I can cuddle.  While I’m not planning to get my own pet, I’ll hav...

My Provider

I rediscovered this name of God this week:  Jehovah-Jireh.  It means, “The LORD provides.”  I could talk for a while about the significance of being named  Provider, because having that name means it is part of who He is, not just what He does.  Maybe I’ll write a devotional about that later, but that wasn’t my plan for this blogpost. Moving is more stressful than I anticipated, but in it Jesus has been so good to me. I pulled up to my apartment, and a family and Elizabeth had come to help me.  The family brought flowers and a wall hanging, and Elizabeth came bearing homemade pizzas for dinner, a case of water, and tissues. I didn’t even get up to my apartment before the tears started.  Jesus sent me beautiful people to help me. Unloading took all of five minutes, as the mom of the family directed traffic and did the heavy-lifting (I was impressed).  Meanwhile I made nervous comments and remarks to the point that the lady turned around, engulfed m...
